Wellness

What is wellness care?

That begs the question first – what is health? Health is defined as a state of optimal physical, mental, and social well-being. It is your body functioning at 100% on all three levels.

Wellness

Health is not available in drugs, supplements, or through surgery. Health comes from within! We have a saying in Chiropractic – “the power that made the body heals the body.”  We are not designed to be sick, we were designed to survive and be healthy. Our bodies are amazing machines, that innately know what to do at each moment.

What determines our quality of health?

Everything – as our body has a response (an actual physiologic change) to everything we do to it. This includes but is not limited to food, drink, drugs or prescriptions, our thoughts….

There are “four categories” of things that determine our health, and each category has both positives and negatives.

  • First, we have the Emotional category. A positive example would be having good, healthy relationships in our life, and a negative example is being stressed and angry at work each day.
  • Second, the Nutritional Category – are you smoking, drinking, and eating McDonald’s regularly or do you eat fresh, organic vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins?
  • Next, our Physical category includes examples such as a history of car accidents, sports injuries, our posture at our desk at work, our exercise level, and so on.
  • Finally, the most important category is our Nervous System Function. We know that the brain controls each organ, tissue, muscle and cell in our body. The communication system between the brain and every organ, tissue, cell and muscle is called the Nervous System, which is housed inside the spine. When the spine is out of alignment, pressure is placed on the Nervous System, and the brain’s messages are unable to reach their destination. When this occurs, the body is malfunctioning, which leads to disease. And this is what we do in Chiropractic – we bring alignment to the spine in order to allow the Nervous System to function at 100 percent!

I encourage each patient to consider their “Four Categories.” Some things we can control, some we cannot. But when our categories are equally balanced with positives and negatives, our body has the ability to adapt without extra stressors placed upon it. When our Nervous System is functioning at 100% and our body can adapt to all of the things we throw at it – that is when we have health and we are well! What do your categories look like?
